The first thing that you have to do before you get medication is to make some modifications to your lifestyle. This is going to help in more ways than one. First of all, it could take care of the problem all together. That being the case, you do not have to spend money on medication. Second of all, even if you do need medication to help beat GERD, then your lifestyle modifications can help keep it from ever coming back. The best thing to do is know what kind of foods cause your heartburn. It will be best to stay away from these foods all together. Next, you should talk to your doctor to see what kind of medications can aggravate your symptoms of GERD. There could be a medication that you are taking right now that is causing everything. The next thing that you have to understand is that gravity does play a role in GERD. Whenever you lie down after you eat, you are allowing the stomach acid (which is more active because you just ate) to be able to flow upward. It's just like water in a glass. If you tip the glass over when it's full, the water is going to poor out. This allows the food to go back into the esophagus and cause heartburn. Also, try not to eat right before bedtime, even if it's just a snack. This is going to get your stomach acid really moving. Also, some supplements that you take can really burn your esophagus, if allowed to come back up. Some vitamins like potassium have to be allowed to stay in the stomach. If you have heartburn after taking potassium, you should talk to your doctor. Next, is the medication. After you make your lifestyle modifications, if it's still not enough, then you may want to think about getting some H2 blockers. Maybe even some pump inhibitors. Although, I am a fan of taking care of GERD the natural way. However, that is not always going to be enough for everyone. In fact, you may want to talk to your doctor first, and see if this type of medication is going to be right for you. Also, if you are overweight, you may want to lose some weight. This is because the excess fat can put way to much pressure on your abdominal area. This works kind of like a ball. When you pinch one side of it the other side fills up with air. Well in this case, when you put pressure on your stomach, your esophagus has to fill up with the stomach acid, because there is no room in the stomach. Remember you are not the only person in the world that is having problems with GERD. This is an ongoing thing for most people, and you have to be able to take care of it right away. Do not live your life with heartburn and being unhappy. That is not what life is about, and besides, life is to short to have to worry about GERD the whole time. So talk to your doctor right away, and see what kinds of steps he thinks is right for you.
