Pediatric GERD, Teens And Kids Dealing With Acid Reflux
Many people only think of GERD as being a disease that effects older adults. However, we are starting to see a lot of kids and young adults that are starting to have to deal with this problem as well. So now you may be asking, “What is GERD?” Well, this is a disease when the stomach contents (including the stomach acid) comes back into the esophagus. This can happen during or after a meal. Of course, the stomach contents do not come all the way up the esophagus, they tend to sit in the esophagus, and this is where the major problem starts. When the stomach acid sits in the esophagus, it tens to rot away and damage the lining of this tube. Some symptoms that go with pediatric GERD would be things like heartburn, vomiting, and chest pains. These are all the same symptoms that you would see if an older adult had GERD. So now the question is, “What causes it?”
The sad truth is that there are many things that can cause pediatric GERD. Some things that can cause these things to act up could be things like spicy foods. Things like sodas with caffeine and exposure to smoking could even cause pediatric GERD. Of course, the biggest cause comes from your family. Although it is not fair, no matter how good your diet is, you could still get pediatric GERD because of your family history. If you have had a long line of people having these problems in your family tree, then you have a high risk of getting it yourself. Some may call this bad luck, and others would call it genes. On a more medical note, pediatric GERD occurs when one of the valves in the lower end of your esophagus malfunctions. When this happens there is nothing to keep the stomach acid from coming up. The anti-acids that you take help keep the acid levels in your body low until the malfunction fixes itself. This is why an anti-acid gets rid of your heartburn.
In case you are wondering what the age limit is on people that have pediatric GERD and normal GERD. it's age 20. Kids that are age 1 to 20 are classified as having pediatric GERD. Of course. just because you have heartburn from time to time does not mean that you have this diseases. Having heartburn from time to time is very normal. All this means is that a little bit of stomach acid has come in contact with your esophagus. Usually this would just happen when you drink or eat something that makes your stomach act up or feel funny. As you would guess, this happens to most people when they eat spicy foods. If you have pediatric GERD, this will happen more often and sometimes even happen when you are not eating. The good news is that GERD can be cured if caught in young teens. In fact, many kids seem to just outgrow it over time. They say that as a kid's body grows up, the door at the bottom of the esophagus seems not to malfunction as much, thus causing less heartburn.
If you have pediatric GERD, and you want some home remedies that can make you feel better, then you may want to try a few of these tips. Whenever you sleep at night, titling your bed up 30 degrees can help keep stomach acid where it belongs. In fact, it makes since when you think about it. If you lay a cup on its side, the water in the cup is going to spill out, however, if the cup is titled just at an angle, then the water will sit more towards the bottom of the cup. It works the same way on the stomach acid in your body. Also, you may want to try and eat smaller amounts of food during the day, instead of large amounts. Try to eat just a small bit of food more often. Eating so much that your stomach is packed full can cause the stomach acid to have no place to go except up. As funny as it may sound, try wearing clothes that are not so tight. This can help lessen the heartburn of GERD as well. Last but not least, try not to eat just before you go to bed. Allow 2 to 3 hours to pass before laying down and going to sleep. This will help your stomach acid be less active. |
