The most common symptom you hear people talking about with this problem would have to be heartburn. This can be very bad if not taken care of right away. So now you may want to know what causes heartburn. Usually this pain is caused by acid from the stomach coming up into the esophagus. As you may be able to guess, this is bad because the esophagus is not made to take stomach acid. So what ends up happening over an extended time frame is that is starts to eat away the esophagus. If you are having difficulty swallowing and very bad chest pain, then you may have an esophagitis, which means the esophageal lining is damaged. If you think that this is something that may be happening to you, then you need to tell your doctor right away before it is too late. Letting this problem keep going is going to end up being the end of you. The problem that adults are facing is, as you get older, the protective lining that is around your esophagus starts to wear down over time. The best way to think of this is like a tire on your car. As you use your tires, they are going to start to get worn down. However, unlike your tires you are not able to go out and get a new esophagus. In adults over 60 years old it is very possible that this Acid Reflux disease could lead to esophagus cancer very quickly. Of course, having heartburn from time to time is not uncommon. Eating spicy foods, and sometimes after big meals, it is possible to get some heartburn. This does not mean that you have Acid Reflux disease or GERD. Of course, if you are starting to get it a lot, then you may need to talk to your doctor about it. Only he can let you know if you should be taking something for it. If you are afraid that you do have this problem, then go see your doctor. He will be able to get you more information about it. If it turns out that you do have this problem, there are different types of treatments out there if you check it early enough. Even if there has been some damage done to your esophagus they have treatments that can not only stop your heartburn, but over time, help to heal your esophagus back up. Living with this kind of disease is not easy, and if you know someone who is having a problem with this, then try talking to them. Let them know that you know what they are going through, and you will be there to help them. If you are the one that is having this problem, do not let it take control of your life. Watch the food that you eat, because there are some foods that can cause the problems to worsen. For a complete list of foods that you should not eat, you should go talk to your doctor. Also, you need to keep in mind that you are not the only one out there with this disease. You are not going to have to fight the battle alone. Millions of people go through this every year, and this is a well talked about problem. Living with it can be hard. The good news is that you no longer have to.
